Indoor marks continue to fall

Anyone seeking a new business opportunity in these difficult economic times should consider printing track and field record books, because the old volumes are being re-written on a weekly basis.

In particular, the assault on world indoor records continued for a second straight weekend, just three weeks in advance of the World Indoor Championships.

In Great Britain last Saturday (Feb. 16), Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia broke Haile Gebrsalassie’s indoor two-mile record. On the same day, Russian Yelena Isinbayeva increased her own indoor pole vault record by two centimeters. These performances came just one week after women’s world indoor marks were set in the 1500 meters, the 60-meter hurdles, and the 4 x 800-meter relay. All five records remain subject to standard IAAF verification procedures.

Isinbayeva’s record-breaking performance at the Pole Vault Stars meeting in Donetsk, Ukraine, shouldn’t have surprised anyone, since it marks the third consecutive year she’s set an indoor record at that event.

Isinbayeva, who hadn’t competed since Oct. 3 of last year, apparently needed a bit of time to warm up completely. She required three tries to clear the bar at 4.87 meters, then missed twice at 4.94. She then boldly had the bar raised to 4.95, and succeeded, to establish the new mark.

The 25-year-old is the reigning indoor, outdoor and Olympic pole vault champion and is also the outdoor world record holder. She will defend her indoor title at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain, beginning March 7.

Bekele, running in the Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham, England, won the two-mile in 8:04.35, edging Gebrsalassie’s old mark of 8:04.69, set at the same event in 2003. Bekele was pushed by runner-up Paul Koech, who set a Kenyan record of 8:06.48.
